In early 2001, the growing need for local healthcare in Johnston County, particularly, the Town of Clayton, had become evident as a result of the community’s recent growth. Johnston County had recently been given the title of “the fastest growing county in the State of North Carolina.” Prior to the Summit Medical Center, most of the families that live and work in Clayton had to commute to Raleigh for their healthcare needs.
The medical center is located on a site elevated above Highway 70 for increased visibility. The site is easily accessible from the Highway and includes both deceleration and acceleration lanes coming into and out of the Medical Park. An additional entrance/exit has been located at the rear of the site. The Summit Medical Center site plan consists of three buildings containing approximately 80,000 square feet of Medical office space. The three buildings are strategically placed with cross access parking lots and abundant landscaping to create a “medical campus” atmosphere. The existing building (32,000 square feet) houses the anchor tenants, Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH) and Duke Medical Center. The two anchor tenants combine to lease about 70% of the sites first building with a surgery center and complimentary services such as radiology, laboratory, and hematology.
The second and third buildings will each consist of approximately 23,000 square feet of condo available for lease or owner occupancy.
The first of four buildings contains an outpatient surgical center on the first floor and doctors’ offices on the second. Staff physicians from JMH as well as those affiliated with the hospital from Duke occupy the facility.
